This man is keeping a secret. He isn’t just guarding sacred art. He’s guarding time.
In the alternate Byzantine timeline I imagined for this saga, keeping the sacred was a duty in itself, a small act of resistance against forgetting. I wanted his strength to come from patience rather than spectacle, so I let the gold around him do the talking. It glows over everything he protects: manuscripts, relics, fragments of faith.
If The Defender is the shield and The Preserver is the artisan, the Custodian is the one who makes sure it all lasts. He neither creates nor destroys. He simply refuses to let anything be lost. Behind him, The Protégé is already stepping out of the shadows, his halo flickering, his outline still unfinished, waiting for time and teaching to shape him.
While I worked on this piece, I kept thinking about how much of what we call heritage survives only because someone sat still and watched over it.

هذا الرجل يحرس سرّاً؛ فهو لا يحرس الفن المقدس فحسب، بل يحرس الزمن. في هذا التاريخ البديل لبيزنطة كان حفظ المقدّس واجباً بحد ذاته، وفعلاً صغيراً من أفعال مقاومة النسيان. أردت أن تأتي قوته من الصبر لا من الاستعراض، فتركت الذهب من حوله يتكلم، يضيء كل ما يحميه من مخطوطات وآثار وشذرات إيمان. كثير مما نسمّيه تراثاً بقي فقط لأن أحداً جلس بصبر وسهر عليه.
