An empire can smash its icons. It can’t smash everyone who knows how to make them.

She’s the other half of the family I imagined for this saga: a saint who lived through Iconoclasm beside her cousin, the Defender of the Icon. But her weapon was teaching. A master of icons, she spent her life training as many mosaicists as she could, so the craft would outlive any order to destroy it.

I gave her the same luminous textures and scattered color as the Defender, and I pictured her surrounded by tesserae, the tiny tiles every mosaic is made of. Each one she hands on is a small victory.
