AAPG Bulletin

Openness within the geological community

First published in 1917, The Bulletin of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG Bulletin) is a leading technical journal. It undergoes peer review.

The Bulletin highlights the importance of the science of Geology. It is vital for understanding the natural resources critical to energy systems. The Bulletin also addresses the associated environmental topics.

Concept Overview

At the heart of this design is a simple yet powerful gesture, the fist bump. Universally recognized as a sign of greeting, solidarity, or celebration, it embodies openness, collaboration, and trust.

This widely understood gesture offers an alternative to the handshake, resonating across generations and communities, and fostering a sense of connection and inclusivity.

Surrounding the gesture are layered geological formations, both literal and metaphorical, reflecting the Earth’s intricate complexity.

These layers, enriched with natural textures and precise technical markups, create a visual dialogue that bridges human connection and the enduring depth of the natural world, adding depth and complexity to the design.

Cover Concept: A Gesture of Connection

The cover is a celebration of openness and collaboration within the geological community, embodied in a single, universal gesture: the fist bump. Whether seen among friends, in sports, or as a sign of support, it symbolizes mutual respect, acceptance, and solidarity, inspiring us to work together towards shared goals.

Framed by layered geological forms, the gesture bridges human interaction and the richness of the Earth itself.

Its inclusivity and universality make it a fitting emblem for the geological community, a community defined by shared discovery, curiosity, and the enduring bonds forged through science.

An alternative treatment style.

Honored to have had the opportunity to contribute to this design.

Grateful to Mr. Daniel Minisini and the AAPG team for the trust and collaboration.
